ACCU-CHEK Active vs. Freestyle FLASH

The FreeStyle Flash by Therasense is blazing a trail with diabetics who appreciate a test meter that’s roughly the size of a car key. Don’t be fooled by the diminutive size, this featherweight contender packs a big punch. Offering alternate site testing, with a mere 3/10th microliter blood sample, and a 7-second average test time, the FreeStyle Flash diabetes test meter is hard to beat. Weighing in at a scant, 1.4 ounces, and only 3 inches in height, the Flash is one of the top contenders in diabetes testing systems.

Not to be outdone, Roche Diagnostics is backing the ACCU-CHEK Active. Just trace the lineage of the ACCU-CHEK Active and it’s easy to see why this meter is not backing down from anyone. The ACCU-CHEK Active is cut from the same cloth as its cousins; the ACCU-CHEK Advantage, ACCU-CHEK Compact, ACCU-CHEK Complete and the ACCU-CHEK Voicemate. The Active tips the scales at slightly over 2 ounces – that’s 57 grams to our Canadian friends. Although the Active outweighs the Flash by a smidge, it makes up for it in speed. The Active boasts measuring times of about 5 seconds. Like the Flash, the Active is capable of alternative testing. Blood samples can be drawn from the forearm, calf, upper arm, palm or finger. However, the Active is a bit more bloodthirsty then the Flash, requiring a sample size of 1 microliter.

No matter how you match them up, it’s hard to pick a clear winner. Both are small and compact and deliver results in less then 10 seconds. Testing can be done in alternate locations on the body and both require relatively small amounts of blood. The Flash, however, is smaller and can get results with an amazingly tiny blood sample.

These two meters are a good match up if you’re looking to upgrade your existing testing system or need to pick your first system. And although this battle isn’t over, our judges say the first round goes to the ACCU-CHEK Active.
